PENS meeting to address fraud

KENNESAW, Ga. -- With the holiday shopping season in full swing, it's never a bad idea to brush up on tips for keeping your identity safe while making purchases.

This month's Cobb County Police Email Notification System (PENS) meeting will address identity and credit card fraud. It will be hosted by Sgt. Mike Dondelinger with the Cobb County Sheriff's Office.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11. It will be held at Cobb County's Precinct I Superstation, which is located at 2380 North Cobb Parkway in Kennesaw.

Police Christmas fund to help needy families

KENNESAW, Ga. -- The Kennesaw Police Department is working to help needy families in Kennesaw and Acworth this holiday season.

The 35th annual Jerry Worthan Memorial Christmas Fund accepts donations of money, food and toys for the less fortunate in north Cobb County.

Food and new toys can be delivered to the Kennesaw City Jail. Money can be delivered or mailed to the Kennesaw Police Department. Envelopes should be addressed to Officer Scott Luther, 2539 J.O. Stephenson Lane, Kennesaw, 30144.

Donations will be accepted through Tuesday, Dec. 18.

The police department will also take donations at Adams Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8. Anyone who donates at the park will be entered into a drawing to win a $25 gift card to LongHorn Steakhouse.

Last year's Jerry Worthan Memorial Christmas Fund helped 86 families, including 242 children. The Kennesaw Police Department is optimistic that this year's movement will be just as successful.

ATLANTA -- Belk department stores will host their first-ever santafest holiday celebration on Saturday, Dec. 1.

All santafests will be held from noon to 3 p.m.

Highlights include crafts, family-friend activities, Christmas treats and, of course, the chance to meet Santa Claus. Participants can enter a drawing to win a $50 kids wardrobe; three winners will be chosen from each Belk store.

Simon malls announce Black Friday hours

ATLANTA -- Five major malls in metro Atlanta have announced their special hours for Black Friday and the post-Thanksgiving weekend.

Many of the malls will also feature giveaways, events and other festivities to kick off the holiday shopping season.

Friday, Nov. 23 -- Midnight to 10 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 24 -- 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 25 -- 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Guest Services will give away exciting prizes on Black Friday, including a $500 American Express gift card.

Mall of Georgia
Friday, Nov. 23 -- Midnight to 10 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 24 -- 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 25 -- 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The first 100 Black Friday shoppers will receive Fashion First Aid Kits packed with seasonal shopping essentials. Customers can also register to win a $500 American Express gift card.

Belk donates $100K to Sandy relief

ATLANTA -- Belk Inc., operator of Belk department stores, has committed $100,000 to the American Red Cross to help the victims of Superstorm Sandy.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those who suffered and continue to struggle as a result of this devastating storm," Belk Inc. chairman and CEO Tim Belk said in a statement. "The American Red Cross is at the forefront of disaster relief efforts, providing much-needed resources and support to those who lives have been impacted by the storm."

Belk's contribution will support efforts both in New York and throughout the company's footprint.

Woman wins $1 million while buying tires

KENNESAW, Ga. -- A Bartow County woman entered a Kennesaw convenience store to buy used tires for her husband's van. She left $1 million richer.

Karen Privette won the prize by playing the Georgia Lottery instant game 50X The Money.

"It was such a shock," Privette, 53, said, adding that she "felt joy and excitement" when she scratched the ticket at the back of the store.

Big Shanty Superette sold the lucky ticket.

Privette, who lives in Adairsville, immediately called her mother and husband to share the good news.

When asked how she planned to spend the prize, Privette said, "I want to pay bills, pay off my daughters' cars, pay off mine, buy my husband a car and pay off my mom's credit card."

Privette works as a senior warehouse clerk. She and her husband have two grown daughters.
