KENNESAW, Ga. -- The city of Kennesaw will break ground on its new skate park at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10.

The Kennesaw Skatepark will be located in Swift-Cantrell Park and will be the first-ever skate park modeled after the competitive street skate park plaza design.

"We're excited that construction on this long-anticipated project is beginning," Kennesaw Mayor Mark Mathews said in a statement.

"The finished skate park will be one of the largest in the Southeast and is expected to draw skateboarders from across the region," RJ Patel, chair of the Swift-Cantrell Park Foundation, added.

About $1.4 million of the $1.8 skate park project was approved by Kennesaw voters as part of the 2011 SPLOST. The rest of the funds will come from private donations and grants.

Swift-Cantrell Park is located at 3140 Old U.S. Highway 41.
