Gov. Deal swears in Ga. Supreme Court justice

ATLANTA (AP) - Gov. Nathan Deal has sworn in the newest justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia.

Georgia Court of Appeals Judge Keith Blackwell was sworn in Thursday morning in the House Chamber of the State Capitol.

Deal last month appointed the 37-year-old Blackwell to fill a vacancy left by Chief Justice George Carley. Carley's resignation as chief justice was effective Tuesday.

Blackwell had served on the Court of Appeals since he was appointed in 2010 by former Gov. Sonny Perdue. He is the 92nd justice since the court's creation in 1845.

Blackwell previously practiced civil and criminal law. He will serve on the court until 2014, when voters will decide whether to keep him on the bench for a six-year term.

MARIETTA, Ga. -- There is still time to cast your ballot before the July 31 primary.

Vote in person from now through Friday, July 27 at the Cobb County Elections Office, which is located at 736 Whitlock Avenue in Marietta.

You may vote from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; the office will also be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 21.

Several satellite voting locations will also open on Monday, July 23 and will be open through Friday, July 27. You may vote at any of them from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; no reason for voting early is required.

Deal appoints Blackwell to Georgia Supreme Court

ATLANTA (AP) - Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed Judge Keith Blackwell to the Georgia Supreme Court effective July 19.

Blackwell will fill a seat left vacant by the pending departure of Justice George Carley, whose resignation becomes effective July 17.

Deal, a Republican, said the court will benefit from Blackwell's experience on "both side of the bench." Blackwell has worked as a judge on the Georgia Court of Appeals since former Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue appointed him in 2010. He's worked as a lawyer in civil practice and formerly was an assistant district attorney in Cobb County.

His appointment marks Deal's first for the state Supreme Court.

Cobb police headquarters renamed

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- The police headquarters in Cobb County has officially been renamed in honor of Robert E. Hightower.

Hightower, a retired Cobb Police chief, served the county for 26 years. He was the first-ever Cobb director of public safety and is the founder of the Department of Public Safety Training Academy, which offers initial and advanced training to emergency personnel.

After retiring from Cobb County, Hightower served as director of the Georgia State Patrol and as the state's first director of homeland security. He has also been a captain with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Hightower began his long and illustrious career as a Navy Seal.

Cobb County Police Headquarters is located at 140 North Marietta Parkway.
