ATLANTA -- Georgia Connections Academy (GACA) has announced that Heather Robinson has been appointed as principal for the new statewide virtual charter school.
GACA is the state's first full-time virtual character school and will serve students in grades K-12 from across Georgia.
The school was recently approved by the Georgia Charter School Commission. Enrollment began on Friday, Apr. 1 for the 2011-2012 school year.
Robinson is a seasoned educator who brings 13 years of experience as both an instructor and administrator in the traditional and virtual school environments.
She most recently served as the assistant principal of instruction at Georgia Virtual School, where she coordinated instructional offerings and established and maintained standards for high-quality teaching.
"I am very excited about the opportunities that Georgia Connections Academy will provide to students across our state," Robinson said. "The Connections Academy model allows teachers, administrators and parents to work together to provide a customized learning approach for each student, and therefore, we can closely monitor each student's performance. The program provides multiple levels of accountability, which are essential to successful education experiences."
Robinson was selected through a national search that yielded more than 80 applicants.
"We are thrilled to have her as our first principal and newest member of the Georgia Connections Academy family," said Stephanie Reid, board president for GACA. "She brings the kind of educational expertise and leadership talent Georgia Connections Academy needs to help make it one of the state's top K-12 public schools."
A former math teacher, Robinson lives in Winder. She earned her master's and bachelor's degrees from the University of Georgia and Clemson University, respectively.
"As a former instructor, I recognize the value of good teachers and the impact they can have on their students," she said. "I am committed to assembling a highly skilled and dedicated team of teachers at Georgia Connections Academy. Our teachers will work to support each family by providing a school experience that will allow students to reach their highest potential. It is our goal for parents and students to embrace our program as a family, and I will strive to provide a culture of community between our teachers, our students and their families."
A tuition-free, virtual public charter school, GACA combines Georgia-certified teachers, a standards-aligned curriculum, unique technology tools, an extensive selection of electives and clubs, and community experiences to create an individualized alternative to the bricks-and-mortar classroom.
Learning from home, students will work closely with a parent or another "Learning Coach" and a licensed Georgia teacher using detailed daily lesson plans that can be personalized to meet their individual needs.
