KSU Owls Football to Take Flight

KENNESAW -- Kennesaw State University is moving ahead with starting a football team.

In a press conference at the suburban Atlanta university Wednesday, President Dan Papp announced he is launching a fundraising campaign to help create a pigskin program. He said the team could begin playing in 2014 if enough money is raised in the next couple of years.

In December, the university formed a committee headed by legendary University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley to determine if the campus could take on the costly task of opening a college football program. Dooley says the program would cost several million to start and as much as $5 million a year to run.

The team would compete in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly Division 1AA.

The university just north of Atlanta has nearly 23,000 students and has grown rapidly in recent years.

Many Kids Need 2 Doses of Flu Vaccine

ATLANTA -- While most people will need only one flu shot or spray to guard against H1N1 and the seasonal flu, this year, many children will need two, according to the CDC.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends two doses of 2010-11 flu vaccine for children 6 months through 8 years of age unless they received at least one dose of 2009 H1N1 vaccine last flu season and at least one dose of seasonal vaccine prior to the 2009-2010 flu season or two doses of seasonal flu vaccine last flu season.

The first dose "primes" the immune system, while the second dose provides immune protection, according to the CDC. The second dose should be given 28 or more days after the first dose.

North Atlanta Pediatrics explains it this way on its website:

Mendenhall's TD in OT leads Steelers over Falcons

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Rashard Mendenhall broke off a 50-yard game-
winning touchdown run on the Steelers' first play of overtime as Pittsburgh
persevered for a 15-9 win over Atlanta in a defensive battle at Heinz Field.

After the Falcons faltered on the first possession of OT, Michael Koenen's
poor 36-yard punt from the 14-yard-line gave the Steelers prime field

Mendenhall wasted little time in making it count, bursting through a hole off
right tackle sealed off by a textbook block from tight end David Johnson on
his way to the end zone.

Mendenhall ended with 120 yards on 22 carries while Hines Ward came up huge
for Dennis Dixon with six catches for 108 yards.

Kennesaw Police Chase Ends With Fatal Crash

KENNESAW, Ga. (AP) -- Police in Kennesaw say a car being pursued by police struck a fence, killing a passenger.

The incident happened just before 4:00 a.m. Friday on Kennesaw Due West Road near Stilesboro Road.

Kennesaw police Sgt. Marty Cunningham said someone at a bar
called police early Friday to report that a customer was leaving

Cunningham says a Kennesaw officer began following the vehicle and when he tried to stop it. He says the driver sped off, but moments later ran off the road on a curve and went through a wooden fence in the back yard of a home.

Kennesaw police spokesman Scott Luther says a piece of the fence went through the windshield, killing the passenger.

Cunningham says the driver was not injured and was arrested.
