Missing 5-year-old boy found safe, father arrested

KENNESAW, Ga. -- The father accused of kidnapping his 5-year-old son after attacking the boy's mother made his first court appearance Friday night.

Joseph Davis, 35, is facing several charges, including assault with intent to kill. Police say he broke into a Kennesaw home and hid in a closet before stabbing the 4-year-old boy's mother seven seven times and then strangling her into unconsciousness. Davis is then accused of taking the child.

Davis and the boy, Ethan Peterman, were discovered at around 4 a.m. Friday at a house in the 400 block of Landover Drive in north Decatur.

DeKalb County Police Capt. Steven Fore said officers knocked on the house's door. The homeowner answered and said Davis was in an upstairs bedroom, while the little boy was asleep downstairs.

Officers found Ethan asleep and determined he was injured. Davis was discovered hiding in an upstairs closet. He was taken into custody without incident, Fore said.

Davis was turned over to Kennesaw Police, while Ethan was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston for evaluation.

The incident began at around 6 p.m. Thursday at the Lakeside Vista Apartments at 2100 Ellison Lakes Drive in Kennesaw, when Davis apparently stabbed the little boy's mother. She was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital; her condition is not immediately known; but police said she was alert and talking with investigators while being transported.

Davis lives in the Cleveland area. Police were initially concerned he would try to take his son to Ohio.

A bond hearing for Davis will be held at a later date.
