Race this Weekend: Celebrate Freedom

MARIETTA, Ga. -- The Celebrate Freedom Festival will kick off this year's event with a 5K and 10K race in Marietta.

Both events will be held Saturday, Aug. 30 at Jim R. Miller Park. Registration opens at 6 a.m., with the 10K scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. The 5K will be off and running at 7:40 a.m.

Awards will be given to the first finishers overall, the first masters finishers and the top runners in each age group. All participants will receive T-shirts, goodie bags and two tickets to Celebrate Freedom, a free Christian music festival featuring such artists as Steven Curtis Chapman, Montell Jordan and Tenth Avenue North.

The 5K costs $30 in advance, while the 10K is $35. The prices go up to $40 for the 5K and $45 for the 10K on race morning.

Registration for the 2014 Cobb County Senior Games is open until Aug. 8. Events will include basketball (three point shot and free throw), billiards, bocce ball, bowling, field events, golf, pickleball, putting, swimming, table tennis and track events. Registration is $20 for Cobb residents and $25 for non-residents. Bowling has an additional fee of $5 and includes three games and shoe rental. Golf has an additional fee of $40 and includes greens fees, cart, continental breakfast and lunch. Opening ceremony will be held Aug. 20 and closing ceremony Sept. 16. Oliver North to sign new novel at FoxTale Book Shoppe

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Lt. Colonel Oliver L. North, USMC Ret. is making one of only two independent bookstore visits nationwide to FoxTale Book Shoppe on Saturday, June 14 at 7 p.m.

North will be midway through his book tour for his new novel, Counterfeit Lies, when he stops at FoxTale Book Shoppe. Due to his tight tour schedule, purchase of Counterfeit Lies will be required to attend the event and non-posed photos will be permitted. North will personalize as well as sign books.

"We are thrilled that Colonel North will be at FoxTale.  This is huge for us, for Woodstock and the surrounding area.  From what we've been told, visitors to Downtown Woodstock will not be able to miss his wrapped tour bus. We anticipate at least 500 people will attend this exciting book event," FoxTale co-owner Ellen Ward said.

Customers can enjoy a complimentary scoop of any Häagen-Dazs ice cream from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at participating shops. The chain recently rolled out two new gelato flavors -- Caramelized Banana Chip and Tiramisu.

Eat at Chili's to help Tenn. tornado victims

(WXIA) -- Several Southern states were slammed by severe weather earlier this week, including Lincoln County, Tenn., which experienced a devastating tornado.

Those who want to contribute to the community's rebuilding fund can now do so, simply by eating at Chili's.

On Sunday, May 4, more than 60 Chili's restaurants in Georgia and Tennessee will contribute 10 percent of the day's earnings to the Lincoln County Disaster Relief Fund.

Chili's diners can also make monetary donations by adding extra money to their check totals.
