Pike Nurseries to host potting party weekend

ATLANTA -- The garden experts at Pike Nurseries are helping customers start 2015 off right with refreshed container gardens and houseplants.

On Saturday, January 10 and Sunday, January 11, Pike Nurseries will host Potting Party Weekend at all store locations. Gardeners of all levels are invited to bring an empty pot from home or purchase a new one, as on-hand associates help them plant indoor or outdoor container gardens, houseplants and terrariums.

Pike Nurseries will also provide complimentary Pike Potting and Container Soil and E.B. Stone Sure Start for pots planted in-store.

With expert potting advice and a wide selection of plants available at Pike Nurseries, guests can welcome the New Year with the perfect container garden for any home.

Shaky Boots Music Festival coming to KSU

KENNESAW, Ga. -- A long list of big-name country stars are scheduled to perform at the Shaky Boots Music Festival in May on the Kennesaw State University campus.

Performers include Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Dwight Yoakam, Dierks Bentley, The Band Perry and Sara Evans.

The festival is set for May 16 and 17. Advance tickets go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. General admission tickets start at $169. VIP ticket packages are $499.

Shaky Boots co-founder Tim Sweetwood told the Marietta Daily Journal he hopes about 30,000 people will attend the festival each day.

The venue could hold about 35,000 people, Sweetwood said, but the specific capacity for the event has not yet been determined.

Sweetwood said he selected Kennesaw for the show because the city is close to Atlanta and is accessible from many different areas.

Comcast to hold job fair in Cobb

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Comcast is looking to fill about 125 positions through a recruitment event to be held next week.

The company hopes to find telesales associates to work at a call center in Alpharetta.

The job fair will be Friday, Jan. 9 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Georgia Department of Labor Cobb-Cherokee Career Center.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. A year or more of sales experience is preferred.

Comcast representatives will conduct interviews during the event. Attendees are asked to dress professionally and bring copies of their résumés.

Variety of Georgia hosts ‘Santa Fun Run’

KENNESAW, Ga. -- It’s time to get into the ho-ho-holiday spirit! To celebrate the season of giving, Variety of Georgia – The Children’s Charity invites families and friends to be a ‘Claus For A Cause’ and participate in the Santa Fun Run 5K on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 8 a.m. at Barrett Summit Office Park.

The 5K event, which is an international fundraising race hosted by Variety’s philanthropic chapters across the world, raises money to enrich, improve and fulfill the lives of children living with disabilities and disadvantages. Runners of all levels can suit up as Santa to help Variety of Georgia give the gift of mobility this season, providing disabled children with educational programs and special equipment needed to overcome the obstacles they face. A family in need will also receive a therapeutic mobility bike during a special presentation from Variety of Georgia.

Students invited to Pizza Farm 2014

FOREST PARK, Ga. -- How do you expose urban youth to Georgia’s agriculture? You open a Pizza Farm!

Fourth and fifth grade students from the Atlanta metropolitan area will learn about Georgia agriculture by making, and eating, pizza at the second annual Pizza Farm event.

County agents with the Cooperative Extension Metro Collaborative of Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Cobb and Clayton counties will lead the event set for Oct. 21-23 at the Georgia State Farmers Market in Forest Park, Ga. The students will learn how dairy, vegetables, grains and meats come together to make the pizza.
