Book Blast at Town Center at Cobb with celebrity readers

KENNESAW, Ga. -- The Simon Kidgits Club at Town Center at Cobb is bringing children’s literacy to the forefront during a fun and engaging adventure perfect for the whole family. Local celebrities—including Kennesaw Mayor Mark Mathews and a member of the Cobb County Police Department—will be on hand to read some of our favorite children’s books.

Hundreds attend AKA peace rally

ATLANTA -- More than 200 metro Atlanta middle school students attended a peace rally and workshop hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. over the weekend.

The rally was a kickoff for 40 Days of Peace, which begins Monday. 40 Days of Peace is a commitment to kindness and service that encourages young people to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

At Saturday's rally, speakers encouraged attendees to stop bullying and stay out of gangs. Police officers gave a presentation on how to interact with law enforcement.

A concurrent workshop for the parents in attendance focused on implementing strategies to keep children safe and on the right track in life.

ATLANTA -- Copeland's presented the U.S. Marine Corps with toys and monetary donations on Saturday, December 8.

Staff members were excited to help the cause, and the restaurant offered free appetizers and desserts to patrons who brought toys or donations.

Both Copeland’s locations in Cumberland and Kennesaw will continue to accept toys or monetary donations for Toys for Tots until December 20.

All patrons are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy, and will receive a free appetizer or dessert (up to a $10 value).

Students wish 'happy holidays' to U.S. troops

ACWORTH, Ga. -- The children at Clark Creek Elementary School STEM Academy in Acworth are showing their love and appreciation for troops fighting overseas during the holidays.

The students recently made and signed a banner for local soldiers. They presented it to Christine Schwartz, a specialist with the Kennesaw National Guard Armory's Family Assistance Center, on the school's Career Day.

FACAA gears up for Georgia Gives Day

ATLANTA -- The Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority (FACAA) recently announced Georgia Gives Day, to take place on Thursday, December 6.

According to the FACAA, Georgia Gives Day gives people across the state an opportunity to donate to their choice of a nonprofit organization, an effort in total to help change the lives of people in need.

Those participating can donate to a cause nearby by searching locations, or to a cause for a special reason, where organizations are listed by category.

Police Christmas fund to help needy families

KENNESAW, Ga. -- The Kennesaw Police Department is working to help needy families in Kennesaw and Acworth this holiday season.

The 35th annual Jerry Worthan Memorial Christmas Fund accepts donations of money, food and toys for the less fortunate in north Cobb County.

Food and new toys can be delivered to the Kennesaw City Jail. Money can be delivered or mailed to the Kennesaw Police Department. Envelopes should be addressed to Officer Scott Luther, 2539 J.O. Stephenson Lane, Kennesaw, 30144.

Donations will be accepted through Tuesday, Dec. 18.

The police department will also take donations at Adams Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8. Anyone who donates at the park will be entered into a drawing to win a $25 gift card to LongHorn Steakhouse.

Last year's Jerry Worthan Memorial Christmas Fund helped 86 families, including 242 children. The Kennesaw Police Department is optimistic that this year's movement will be just as successful.
