ACWORTH - When Nina Brante was about 5years old, her mother learned something interesting about her.

"I think it goes back to her kindergarten teacher," said Sheri Brante, Nina's mom. "She said, 'Nina has one of the highest emotional IQs of anyone in the class.'"

Nina, who is now 17, has proven her kindergarten teacher pegged her right as a kind, goodhearted soul who believes in doing things for others.

Two years ago, she help found Strength in Stilettos, an organization dedicated to empowering teens girls through not only helping them purchase affordable prom dresses, but by providing college scholarships to deserving girls who show academic promise.

Strength in Stilettos collected more than 400 formal dresses and sold them at a huge consignment sale, in which the sellers made money on what they sold.

"(The dresses) ranged from $20 to $200," said Nina, who recently graduated from Allatoona High School.

Strength in Stilettos raised $2,000, which allowed the group to give away two $500 scholarships -- one to a girl at Allatoona High School and one to a Kennesaw Mountain High School student.

"We have students this year that ... would not have been able to go to prom without the dresses from the consignment sale," said Dawn Neeley, Allatoona High School counselor.

Nina's vision and hard work impressed counselor Neely so much that she nominated her for 11Alive's Kids Who Care Award, which recognizes the volunteer efforts of area teenagers.  The Junior League of Atlanta partners with 11Alive to sponsor Kids Who Care and annually awards $1,100 scholarships to five local teens.
