Simulated Emergency Scheduled for KSU
Events, Schools

KENNESAW, GA -- In observance of National Fire Prevention Week, Kennesaw State University officials will set fire to a mock dorm to show students how quickly fire can spread.

The demonstration will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 5 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the north end of campus near University Village Suites adjacent to Idlewood Avenue. KSU Police will be on the scene to handle crowd and traffic control issues. Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services personnel will be on hand to extinguish the blaze at the end of the exercise.

KSU officials hope this event will teach students how devastating it can be when a lighted candle comes in contact with combustible materials such as bedspreads, curtains or notebook paper -- items commonly found in college dorms. An estimated 23,600 fires are caused by candles each year, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
