Jury Chosen for KSU Student in Immigration Debate

MARIETTA, GA -- Jury selection has been completed in a trial on traffic violation charges against a Georgia college student and illegal immigrant whose case has become a flashpoint in the national debate on immigration.

Jessica Colotl pleaded not guilty Thursday to misdemeanor charges of impeding the flow of traffic and driving without a license.

Police stopped the 22-year-old student at Kennesaw State University for a traffic violation in March. Cobb authorities turned her over to federal immigration officials after learning she was in the country illegally. She was 11 when her parents crossed
the border with her from Mexico.

Immigration officials are allowing Colotl to stay in the country for a year so she can complete her studies.

Colotl's attorney said he hopes last-minute negotiations will allow the student to pay a fine and avoid a trial.

KSU Students to Vote on New Football Team

KENNESAW -- Kennesaw State University students will decide this week whether to raise fees to pay for a new football program.

KSU's 23,000 students have until Sunday to vote on increasing student fees by $100 per semester.

A university committee headed by legendary University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley estimated earlier that a team would cost several million to start and as much as $5 million a year to run.

If approved, the team would compete in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly Division 1AA, and could kick off as soon as 2014.
