Variety of Georgia hosts ‘Santa Fun Run’

KENNESAW, Ga. -- It’s time to get into the ho-ho-holiday spirit! To celebrate the season of giving, Variety of Georgia – The Children’s Charity invites families and friends to be a ‘Claus For A Cause’ and participate in the Santa Fun Run 5K on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 8 a.m. at Barrett Summit Office Park.

The 5K event, which is an international fundraising race hosted by Variety’s philanthropic chapters across the world, raises money to enrich, improve and fulfill the lives of children living with disabilities and disadvantages. Runners of all levels can suit up as Santa to help Variety of Georgia give the gift of mobility this season, providing disabled children with educational programs and special equipment needed to overcome the obstacles they face. A family in need will also receive a therapeutic mobility bike during a special presentation from Variety of Georgia.

Atlanta-area unemployment decreases in October

(WXIA) -- Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate fell again last month.

October's rate was 7.0 percent, down from September's 7.3 percent. It was 7.6 percent in October 2013.

Cobb County's unemployment rate was 6.5 percent last month.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said the area added 18,800 jobs in October, which contributed to the rate decrease. Metro Atlanta has added nearly 58,000 jobs since October of last year. Fewer area residents filed for unemployment insurance last month too.

Metro Athens had Georgia's lowest October unemployment rate, at 5.4 percent. The Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest, at 9.3 percent.

ATLANTA -- Mall of Georgia and Town Center at Cobb invite Atlanta-area kids and parents to celebrate the season and spread holiday cheer at their Simon Kidgits Club's annual holiday celebrations on Saturday, Dec. 6 – sponsored this season by the popular animated movie “The Boxtrolls” coming this holiday season on Digital HD from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Each mall’s Kidgits events are as follows:

Mall of Georgia – Kidgits Club Breakfast with Santa: Saturday, Dec. 6, 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the Food Court

Town Center at Cobb – Kidgits Club PJ Party with Santa: Saturday, Dec. 6, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Upper Level JCPenney Wing

J. Christopher's adopts 16 families for the holidays

(WXIA) -- J. Christopher's announced Monday it has "adopted" 16 families to give them the holiday of their dreams.

Every year, the restaurant chain helps the communities it serves by providing families in need with household goods, toys, books and school supplies. Customers have the option of giving gifts and donations to the cause.

This season's Adopt-a-Family campaign began Friday, Nov. 21. Participating locations and the schools their adopted families' children attend include:

Simon malls announce holiday hours

Simon malls announce holiday hours

(WXIA) -- Atlanta-area Simon shopping centers announced enhanced holiday season opening hours to accommodate the needs of busy holiday shoppers.

Lenox Square, Mall of Georgia, Northlake Mall and Town Center at Cobb will be open from 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 27 (Thanksgiving) through 1 a.m. Friday, Nov. 28 to kick off the holiday shopping season. These malls will re-open at 6 a.m. on “Black Friday,” Nov. 28, and will close at 10 p.m. that evening. Select retailers in each mall will be open between 1 a.m. and 6 p.m. For information on store holiday hours, please visit each retailer’s individual websites.

Phipps Plaza will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 27, but will open at 8 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 28 for “Black Friday” and close at 10 p.m. that evening.

North Georgia Premium Outlets and Calhoun Premium Outlets will be open from 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 27 through 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 28.
