Chick-fil-A to host Daddy-Daughter Date Night

(WXIA) -- Chick-fil-A will bring back its popular Daddy-Daughter Date Night this weekend.

The fifth annual event will be Saturday, Feb. 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at participating restaurants.

Daddy-Daughter Date Night encourages fathers and their little girls to spend time together. Every "couple" will receive take-home booklets featuring conversation starters and ideas for future outings.

Attendees will also be treated to tableside service, limousine and trolley rides, and other surprises.

Daddy-Daughter Date Night is free, except for the cost of food. Seating is available every hour; fathers and daughters are encouraged to call their local Chick-fil-A locations in advance to reserve a time.

Blood donation opportunities: Cobb County

(WXIA) -- The American Red Cross needs blood donations and has provided healthy metro Atlanta residents with several opportunities to give.

Inclement weather and widespread flu have prevented many usual donors from giving, according to Red Cross spokesperson Kristen Stancil. Several blood drives will be held throughout the area this month to make up the difference.

The Red Cross especially needs blood types O negative, A negative and B negative.

Atlanta-area Simon malls to host Kidgits Club Book Blast

ATLANTA -- Atlanta-area Simon malls are hitting the books!

To help foster the importance of childhood literacy and reading, Mall of Georgia, Town Center at Cobb and Northlake Mall are scheduled to host their annual Simon Kidgits Club Book Blast on Saturday, Feb. 21.

For each mall’s event, families can enjoy a special read-aloud session of popular modern classics with local celebrities and will be eligible for drawings to win free books and special prizes. Attendees can also look forward to engaging, book-based activities that will help bring these stories to life.

As part of the annual event, children are encouraged to bring new or gently used books to be donated to each mall’s participating charity.

Downtown Kennesaw to get 167 apartments, commercial development

Downtown Kennesaw to get 167 apartments, commercial development

KENNESAW, Ga. -- Kennesaw officials have approved a $20 million residential and commercial development for the city's downtown area that will include 167 apartments spread across 24 buildings.

The project is scheduled to begin within the next few months and is estimated to take about 18 months, according to Darryl Simmons, Kennesaw's zoning director.

The new development will also offer 10,000 square feet of restaurants, retail and commercial space, according to Mayor Mark Mathews.

Atlanta-based The Halter Companies will build the apartments, amenities, shopping and restaurant buildings.

(WXIA) -- The Georgia Department of Transportation has a number of Atlanta-area construction projects on its schedule this weekend.

Drivers are asked to avoid traveling on certain stretches of Interstate 285, as lane closures are expected to result in long delays.

As always, all weekend work is weather permitting.

Scheduled projects include:

Cobb County
2 northbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between Paces Ferry Road and Cobb Parkway from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday for sign structure work.

DeKalb County
2 westbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between Northlake Parkway and Chamblee Tucker Road from 7:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for sign structure work.

Fulton County
2 lanes in each direction of I-285 will be closed between Cascade Road and the I-20 interchange from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for sign structure work.

"From frozen pops to double-decker burgers, relatively new to old standbys, these are the 25 most iconic dishes in the city," the website says.

The list features, in alphabetical order by restaurant:

20 apartments damaged in Kennesaw fire


KENNESAW, Ga. -- No one was hurt when a fire ripped through a Kennesaw apartment building overnight.

The fire broke out at around 1:30 a.m. Friday in a 20-unit building at the Heights of Kennesaw Apartments in the 1900 block of Barrett Lakes Boulevard.

A Cobb County Fire spokesperson said eight apartments suffered fire damage, while the remaining 12 had smoke and water damage. Apartment management confirmed all residents escaped the blaze.

The Red Cross was called in to assist 11 families. Red Cross spokesperson Sherry Nicholson said the agency will provide food, clothing and hotel lodging for the 18 adults and five children.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation. Nineteen of the 20 units were occupied at the time of the fire.
