Two-story house fire in Cobb County

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- An investigation is underway into what caused a house to catch fire in Kennesaw Monday morning.

The fire happened at 272 Heck Road.

Cobb County Fire spokesperson Dan Dupree said the call came in at 10:27 a.m. When they arrived on scene, the two-story house was fully engulfed. Fire crews battled the blaze from the outside due to a collapse hazard. One person evacuated the home with no injuries. It took firefighters about 40 minutes to put out the fire.

Kennesaw city councilman pleads guilty to molesting 9-year-old boy

KENNESAW, Ga. (WXIA) -- A former Kennesaw mayor and current city council member charged with molesting a young boy entered a last minute plea.

Leonard Leroy Church, 67, cried when admitting in open court to molesting a 9-year-old boy back in June of 2014 and having 800 to 1,000 images of child pornography.

Judge Mary E. Staley sentenced him to 40 years in prison, with 18 years to serve.

Cobb District Attorney Vic Reynolds offered Church a plea deal in November to admit guilt -- get sentenced to 30 years, to serve 15.  Church then declined, but over the weekend before his trial was set to start, he contacted both his attorneys and the DA about pleading guilty.

Shoppers already camping out for Black Friday deals

KENNESAW, Ga -- Shoppers have already begun lining up at some stores in Metro Atlanta for savings that start on Thanksgiving Day.

Tents were lined up on the sidewalk outside the entrance to the Best Buy in Kennesaw Wednesday. About 20 people said they were waiting for the doors to open at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Man shot to death at Kennesaw apartment complex

COBB COUNTY, Ga. – Police say a man was shot to death at an apartment complex in Kennesaw early Saturday.

According to Cobb County Police, officers found a man with a gunshot would at the Shiloh Valley Overlook apartments around 12:30 a.m.


The man, identified as 29-year-old Stephen Kent Lindamood, was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, but later died from his injuries.

One suspect was taken to Cobb County Police headquarters for questioning, but was released.

Kennesaw State police investigation two sex assaults, school starts awareness program

KENNESAW, Ga -- Kennesaw State University (KSU) police are investigating two sexual assaults on women on campus that happened the first week of school.

The sexual assaults both occurred on campus within days of the Monday, Aug. 17 start of school at Kennesaw State.

Kennesaw McDonald's SWAT standoff ends peacefully

KENNESAW, Ga. -- No one was hurt when a gunman demanded money from customers at a Cobb County McDonald's overnight.

Police said the suspect entered the McDonald's on Cobb Parkway in Kennesaw at around 1 a.m. Wednesday. About five or six employees and two or three customers were inside the restaurant at the time.

Cobb County Police said the gunmen demanded money from the register, then lined up the victims and told them to give up their money and personal belongings, including cell phones. A few victims managed to escape the building. A SWAT team arrived to try to bring the situation under control.

When responding officers made their way inside the restaurant, they learned the suspect had escaped. He has not yet been caught or identified; witnesses described him as a young black man.

Cobb increases enforcement after student hit by car

KENNESAW, Ga. -- A 12-year-old boy is recovering with a broken arm after being hit by a car on his way to school.

Police say the seventh grader attends Palmer Middle School and had decided to walk that day.

The boy ran across Shiloh Road, believing all the traffic had stopped, but a woman -- trying to skip the long line of traffic -- cut into the center lane and hit him.
